First Time: From Japanese Diagram to Written Pattern

I want to learn how to read a Japanese pattern or diagram so I will make this my first time risk of trying to read one.

I will just start on a simple motif pattern and then maybe in time will move on to a bigger pattern like a flower or a doily. The pattern I will use is from issuu.com. This website has a lot of publications on crochet diagrams written on Japanese and to be honest, I had a pattern overload just looking at all the pictures. But now I will make something out of that overload and will try to convince my self that I can translate crochet diagrams.

So let's start.....

So usually motifs starts with a ring. It could be a chain ring (which is a very good way to start as a beginner), a sliding loop, or a slip knot. I'll talk about these on other posts in the future. For now lets start with a sliding loop. The reason for this is because most of the diagrams do not show (or if they do, I wont be able to know since the diagram words are written in Japanese) how many chains you would do for the chain ring.

This is the pattern::

As you can see, this pattern uses the following symbols to indicate crochet stitches::

chain (ch)

double crochet (dc)

half double crochet (hdc)

 treble crochet (tr)

slip stitch (slip st)

single crochet (sc)

Here are pictures on how to make the sliding loop::

At #3 picture, work the required number of starting chains for the round shown in the diagram. At this time, its 5.

At #4 picture, work the required number of stitches for the round as shown in the diagram. At this time round 1 would be::

Round 1 chain 5 (counts as 1st dc and ch-2), *dc on loop, chain 2*, repeat *to* 10 times, dc on loop, join with hdc to 3rd chain of ch-5.

Now we are done in round 1, we now proceed to the other rounds.....

Round 2 chain 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc on space made by the joined hdc, *3 dc on next 2-ch space, repeat * 11 times, dc on space hdc, slip st on top of ch-3.

Round 3 chain 4 (counts as 1st dc), treble in next dc, *ch 4, make 1 treble in each next 3 dc*, repeat from * to * 11 times, make 1 treble in each of next 3 dc, ch 4, treble in next dc, slip st on top of ch-4.

Round 4 chain 1, *sc on ch-4 space, make hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc on same space*, repeat * to * on next 10 ch-4 space, sc on ch-4 space, make hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc on same space, slip st on ch-1. Fasten off.

As you  noticed, there's no symbol for slip st on the end of the pattern, I just added it so as to indicate how to end the last round. But of course, as a crocheter, even without indications in the pattern you already know that almost all patterns ends with a slip stitch and fastening off.

So, that's how I read diagrams. Its a little difficult at start but with more practice, I think I was able to pull it off..... It would be grand if I'd be able to translate a whole diagram of a hat or bag. Hopefully.....one day.... :)

I'll try to post more translations in the future...

Crochet Shares

Today I'll share 3 things::

So here they are....

First Share

Links on how to read crochet charts or diagrams

These pages helped me learn how to read crochet diagrams and I still refer to them every time I encounter new crochet symbols in a chart. Hope this will help you too...

Second Share

Here's a link to Lucy of Attic24's tutorial about How to Join Squares As You Go. I have learned so much from her and have made and finished my first pillow case. I like this technique as well better than other styles for joining squares. Furthermore, I still need to learn how to sew... In short, I don't have any choice... Hahahahha!! (>‿◠)✌

Yey! And still counting...
Call me anything you want...But I still like to open my heart and let you know how I felt about this.... You might even say:: Whaaattt?? You're too shallow. Too easy to please... But I am... And at least I'm happy... The most important thing is that I celebrated with the people who loved me and continually supports me on my new found passion in life... Enough reason for me to discover new things from the crochet world and create something to inspire others as well.....  (◡‿◡✿)

How about you, what are you celebrating today?

Crochet Motif:: Set A

I'm stopping on this particular town that I'm calling Motif City. Yes. After my traverse at the Scarf Village and my wild adventure in Hats Galore, I am slowly moving to a new place in the crochet world.

I am so captivated by this little yet so undoubtedly challenging craft. Every now and then, I see them every time I look up and search for crochet lace. I constantly tell my self:: that's easy, I can do that...and so I did.... But I was wrong....

When I created the first one I was like:: whaaaattt??? Look at the picture, it's so perfect! Mine was curly and not even...

And so I learned that motifs are usually blocked. I'm pretty sure you already know what I mean. But unfortunately for me, I don't have materials available for blocking (i.e. pins and blocking board). Although I'm still thinking of other ways on how to do it. And so I evilly decided to paste them on my notebook. Ha ha ha! Yes, sir, I did! So that will explain why my background for these silly creatures have lines....

I also noticed that making motifs can help me in practicing my tensions. Cause motifs will surely challenge every niche you got on crocheting.

I found the pattern from Magic Thread. Says the motifs are from a Japanese magazine.

OK no more blab...here's my version::

Motif 91

Motif 89

Motif 92

Motif 90

Motif 88

Motif 87

Motif 88 is not finished, I forgot to add the last round and just cut the yarn. I was too lazy to finish it....lol

The motif below is from the MyPicot website. Pattern # is 4012. I made it for 2 hours. I am planning to make a table cloth out of this one so good luck to me! ☺

Can't miss to arrange them in a portrait!

How about you? What did you challenge your self today? (>‿◠)✌

The Checkerboard Scarf

I finished my second scarf! Yey! (>‿◠)✌

The pattern for the stitches can be found here at the Lion Brand website.... It's called Checkerboard Stitch

It's super simple, great for beginners like me, and I love the combination of the colors gray and purple....

I think you can make it on any type of yarn and use a particular hook that you like. If you'll make it with a thread yarn, my advice is to use triple crochet stitch to make a very loose fabric. (Good idea for me! hahahaha :D )

So...here it is...

first few rows.....

still need to work on those edges....

working on the edges...sorry pic blurred....

 final result...

I'm now off to my third scarf! Yey!....

'Til next time....(◡‿◡✿)

Introducing: The Beginner's Block

Today I launched my new blog page:: Beginner's Block. Here I listed some of the blog or web links that helped me in my crochet journey. I'm so excited about this. To be honest I'm not much of a bookmark person. I do not often use browser bookmarks and it's tiring to always search for the same topic on Google. The list of my favorite blogs here helped me with that. But I still want to refine my searching and put it in just one page. I don't want to write it in a notebook nor in a sticky note. I have a really bad habit. So I just decided to make a page on my blog for it! Yey! This will help me from time to time if ever I forgot something about stitching or if I forgot the website or blog post where I got this type of pattern or chart. Things like that.....It's like my backpack has gotten lighter. Now, wherever I go, I'd know where to find my things.

To go to the the Beginner's Block just click the first button on the upper right side of this page.....

My journey to the crochet world is getting exciting every moment...There are always new things to learn and discover. If you think that crochet is just for clothing and fashion, you're wrong. From these pictures I learned that crocheting plus artistry plus purpose can lead to a grand and unique masterpiece that can contribute to the history of arts, society, and awareness to social or environmental issues. Some of the pieces here are made up of recycled materials, some are made by real artists that has great passion for this type of art works. For me they are great inspiration and my love for this new found passion grew in my heart. I can't wait to make my own masterpiece!
